Guitar lessons, me improvising and sharing my original music.
The Other Side
Here's my latest song. I was thinking about how we should try to focus on the light that is at the end of the dark tunnel, and this is the song that came from that. I often think I write music that belongs in a film, so if anyone wants to hit me up about that then message me on my website. Cheers

DIRTY MENKITO (Rumba/Funk)
Просмотров 7621 день назад
Here's a song I wrote back in 2004 (I think) I was into mixing funk, electronic and rumba/flamenco music together. I always had a soft spot in my heart for this tune so here it is finally reborn. It was fun to relearn and record this one. It's available on streaming platforms. Enjoy Website: https:/thguitarist.com for music/tabs/merch Spotify: open.spotify.com/playlist/1y6... ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much. 🙏
So tasteful! I am a beginner, and sorry if thats a dumb question, but what scale is this in? Like which scale lends itself to rumba? And what is the way to properly phrase things in this genre to make it fit?
Thanks a lot for this i appreciate it so much, there's so much you can do with this, very enjoyable
No problem. And yes, there are many different applications for this technique. Have fun with it.
💪👍
I really like the style
It’s a fun style to play. Have fun with it.
Where is number 2?
I never did one. Not sure I will. Many tutorials about finger style playing will get you where you need to be and there are plenty out there.
@@TobyHack-thguitarist but yours was the best i found so far.
@@sourabhsoni7845 thanks. You can always hit me up for private skype lessons.
This is a very valuable video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, it’s not as hard as people seem to think. Hopefully this gets people to the next level ;)
@@TobyHack-thguitarist Very appropriate for next level playing.
@@DedekindMusic it can certainly help
Lovely moves keep it up
Thank you.
I think one should continue and become an official song 🎉
I’m writing and recording more & more so there’ll be new songs coming 😊
@@TobyHack-thguitarist awesome, let's goo rumba 💪
bro Ive been looking all over youtube for this explanation .. you nailed it and i finally get how to get to the next level with my improvising.. thanks for sharing that.. it just dropped in and made perfect sense.. legend..
That’s great. Modes can definitely be a tricky thing to understand in the beginning. Glad this helped you out.
Wow. Great tutorial. Many thanks.
Glad you liked it
Some memories never get old
Love from india ❤
Joeeee que acordes tan flamencos oleee
Great lesson! Many thanks!
Thanks, I have a few others like this on my page if you want some other ideas.
@@TobyHack-thguitarist I'll definitely take advantage of your lessons. That's what I've been looking for. Many thanks for uploading the good stuff for free. Take care! Allow a personal remark... Your talent makes me even more fascinated with Australia :)
@@maciejdyga2857 no problem enjoy the other lessons and if you feel the need for a skype lesson to get more out of these techniques just message me on my website. Cheers
Good tutorial with excellent technique exposition. Looking for a online guitar coach
Hi, thanks for that. Hit me up for skype lessons if you’re interested. Cheers.
This video rocks. As I'm a flamenco guitarist, I use variations on this technique but for rumba tunes. Now that I've just seen One Love, I'm brushing up my Reggae rhythms. Hahaha. Thanks x 1,000 for the vid. What guitar are you playing, BTW? It sounds great.
Cool man, I’m glad you’re mixing it up. I love using flamenco techniques in other styles to make it more fun and interesting to play. I have some other videos that go into similar stuff that you may want to check out. Cheers
Also, the guitar was made for me in Melbourne Australia buy a guy who goes by the name “ringtail guitars” I believe. I’lll have to check when I get home
Got it down. Thanks!
Another trick in the bag. Good job
Awesome 😎
Glad you dig it.
OMG!.. thanks wow..
No problem. Have fun with it.
Love the playing! What type of strat is that and where can you get one? Beautiful guitar!
Hey thanks. This is a great relic job by John McLoughlin at McLoughlin Guitars. Plays great and sounds awesome.
@@TobyHack-thguitarist Thank you! Keep putting out content. I know this video is older, but was super helpful to see the percussive right hand technique!
@@mbtrav0 more videos are planned for the next few weeks ;)
The RUclips algorithm has been magical lately. First, Paul Davids gets me all excited about Funk using his electric guitar. Then, I do my monthly swap of guitars and pull out my Martin 0012-28. I watch a few videos of people who actually know how to play it. Then - you. This funk. That guitar. 🎼🥁🎸 I’ll check back in in a few weeks when I’ve half nailed the right hand technique and I’m complaining about how I can’t change chords and do it at the same time! Thx for the vid.
All hail the mighty algorithm gods!! Haha, glad the video found you. There are a few others i have done that'll help your strumming hand. Enjoy
Bravo 👏
Thanks 😊
Drop D tuning cool . I like the chord progression . I like your style .your talented player and very humble .thank you for making it so simple i get it . I played in Drop D tuning for years i dont play anymore .i just listen now
Hey, thanks for your kind words. It's a shame that you don't play anymore but it's always great just to kick back and listen to music you love ;)
Hey bro, could you share the tabs for Joselito? I will buy them! Love your work.
Hi Miguel, Thanks, I'm glad you like my playing. All my tabs are available on my website. Enjoy :)
Quality video that m8
Glad you think so. Keep up the practice with those ears ;)
@@TobyHack-thguitaristme ears are locked in buddy , I love the scales it sounded 🔥
@@Texicash then a big thanks. I appreciate it. Onwards n upwards
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Thanks, glad you got something from it.
Superb Playing . Golden Dawn by Yngwie Malmsteen if you do so wish 😊
Oh wow, that’s quite a comparison. Thank you for your kind words.

This one lesson just changed my playing. Thank you so much for this.
That's awesome. I'm glad it unlocked the goodies for you.
ÓLE!!!!!!❤❤❤
Thank you 😊
Just beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks, glad you dig it.
Thank you for breaking this down and taking something that seemed undoable and giving me the confidence to give it a try.
That’s cool man, get into it and never look back. It’s a fun style. Once you got the techniques you can do all sorts of cool stuff with it. Have fun.
I haven't seen a p90 revstar in the wild.
So good
Thank you. I love this stuff.
Toby, just wondering if your able to go through this and unpack how to play your solo part back in La rumba ( ruclips.net/video/LgKOnHwaCmg/видео.htmlsi=3n6-dCAcokM2mi6W)
Hi, I can definitely do a video looking into this solo. For Amour d’un dia, is it the intro or the little solo you want to learn about?
@@TobyHack-thguitarist I love the intro the most so probably that but I feel like other solo part is useful too so both
@@Liber.l I can do the intro, but I’ll do a separate video for the other solo which will include how I approach soloing in general so it’ll cover how I went about the little end solo on amour d’un Dia.
@@TobyHack-thguitaristsounds good! Thank you
You sure have those chord tones down, nice.
Thanks, I spent a long time getting that stuff drilled into my ears and hands.
beautiful work
Thanks man. I was having fun on this one for sure.
Majestic
Thank you kindly 😊
Really one of them. there are others too on ur channel short videos like, La rumbaaaaaaaa, rubma solo practise & rumba improv to warm up the digits <3
Thanks. I actually don’t think about “the best” when it comes to solos. There are definitely ones I like more than others, especially when there are less mistakes in them haha. Cheers
I am fan anyway cheers @@TobyHack-thguitarist
All good man, thanks for your support.@@TheElitess
great arrangement❤
hey thank you
@@TobyHack-thguitarist how many years you've been playing for?
@@darshangoswami1294 I’ve been playing for 33 years now.
@@TobyHack-thguitaristI'm really not surprised. Your guitar playing is truly impressive, sir. It's clear that you've put a lot of time and dedication into honing your craft. Have a good one.
@@darshangoswami1294 thank you for your kind words. I did work a lot, but I love it, so it was a fun. 🤩
You just do not see a reggae band where the guitarist bangs his guitar like a bongo. The bongo player does that part. The guitarist plays a smaller but very important rhythmic part. Reggae is not a solo sport. It is about every one playing their part.
Yup, I’ve never seen it. But, I don’t, and never have played in a reggae band. I usually play in a duo with a singer or solo. So this is how I play to make it sound more interesting. Adding percussion while playing guitar can bring so much to the song/performance, especially when in a duo. If I was playing in a reggae band, there’s now way I’d be doing this stuff I’m teaching here, I’d play my part “the right way”. People have asked me how I do this style after they saw me do it live, so that’s why this tutorial exists. Have a great day.
HI' IS THAT CORT GUITAR ?
Hi, no this a Cordoba. Great guitar and has a smaller neck than a standard classical. It’s the “fusion” model.
@@TobyHack-thguitarist Hi, your guitar is very similar to the COrt CEC-3 I have, it is also a hybrid with a narrow neck almost like an acoustic, it is very similar to it, that's why I asked. Thank you very much for the enriching video and for your quick reply.
@@SOOONJE Cort have some great guitars available. I used to have one years ago. Glad you liked the video. Have a great day/night.
❤
Thank you. Enjoy 😊
Fantastico! 👏🏽
Woohoo 😊 thanks
Wow Good one.. as usual Toby
Thanks so much. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I can see that you haven’t lost any of that … I’m really happy to see you playing this track we wrote together.. love you my bro
I can still wiggle my digits a bit ;) I hope You’re doing well.
Phenomenal playing brother
Thank you. I was definitely enjoying this one.
Very good :)
